Championship banner unveiled prior to season opener
The UW-Whitewater men’s basketball season
opener Saturday night drew a crowd 1,015 to Kachel Gymnasium. The night began
with the 2012 NCAA Division III national championship banner unveiled on the
south wall of the gymnasium. It is now the 3rd championship banner
that sits just to the right of UW-Whitewater’s 1984 and 1989 banners.
The new championship banner isn’t the only
new adornments that have been added to Whitewater’s basketball facility at Williams Center.
Kachel Gym also has state of the art
Datronic’s scoreboards and digital display boards on both the north and south
walls of the gym.
Large, black, UW-Whitewater banners ring the
upper levels of the east and west walls of the gymnasium. The banners are similar
to the banner on the facing of the Perkins Stadium press box.
The same atmosphere that has made Perkins
Stadium one of the great game-day atmospheres in the country is now evident at
nearby Kachel Gym.
When the UW-Whitewater starting lineup was
announced the houselights go dark, spot lights are turned on, and a twin tower
smoke machine is engaged as each Warhawk starter is announced.
It’s very cool!!
An opening night crowd of 1,015 was on hand
Saturday night.
With the spirit and stunt squads, Willie
Warhawk, and best student section in the WIAC – the place to be this season is
at Kachel Gymnasium watching your UW-Whitewater men’s and women’s basketball
teams compete for a WIAC Championship!!
