Warhawks and Elmhurst treat fans to intense, physical scrimmage

It might be a week before the season officially starts but the UW-Whitewater men’s basketball team brought its trademark intensity to Friday night’s scrimmage vs. Elmhurst College at Kachel Gymnasium.

The evening included two 20 minute periods that featured what will likely be the Warhawks 11 man rotation, at least early on.

The Hawks “won” both halves. Elmhurst “won” a final 15 minute period featuring both teams reserves. The Warhawks had a chance to “win” the final period but a potential game-winning shot rolled off the rim.

It was a valuable scrimmage for us because because Elmhurst plays so physical and has some size,”  Warhawk head coach Pat Miller said folowing the scrimmage. “It was very much like what we’ll see when we get to conference play.

This year’s team is evenly split with those returning off last year’s national championship team and players, either freshman or transfers, that are still learning what the Warhawk system is all about.

“That’s a process because we run a lot of things both offensively and defensively and it will take time for the new guys to learn the sequences and understand the reads,” Miller said. “We know that and we have another week before opening the season next Saturday vs. Beloit College. I really believe we’re progressing well.”
